Have you ever had anyone say this to you?
"You are soooooo lucky to have such a nice house."
"You are soooooo lucky that you know how to do all this work."
"You are soooooo lucky that you can spend as much time as you can fixing up this place."
"Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...."
You know, if I were lucky, I'd win the lottery and pay someone to do all this crap! But, you know something else? The harder I work, the luckier I get! Maybe I should actually BUY a lottery ticket........
Luck has NOTHING to do with it, right Gary?! :) Just downright insanity!
ReplyDeleteI'm hearin' ya...
no one ever says that to me. Mostly people are bewildered and floored by the fact that we spend our weekends doing all this stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhen we tackle the 2nd floor rental, we will have to pay others to do it because we can't keep it vacant for as long as it would take us to do the work. That should be an interesting experience.
Nope, most people think we're crazy. :)
ReplyDeleteMy neighbors tell me I'm lucky to know how to do all the stuff we do...but they still think I'm crazy for actually doing it!
ReplyDeleteGary,
ReplyDelete"Luck" is a funny thing. Maybe its good diet, or sleep habits, or maybe you went to the right summer camp.
I too get irritated when I work hard at something for a long time and someone comes along and tells me how lucky I am to have achieved success.
My first recollectible experience with this was wheel-thrown pottery. My next was studying a language. Now it is fixing up this house. If you make it a two to three hour part of your day to sit down at a wheel and throw clay, eventually you'll get pretty good at it. If you spend 12 or 14 hours a day studying a language, eventually you will speak it with proficiency. When I have spent two or three days in my front yard, augering post holes, pouring concrete, nailing up fencing and side boards, it is not a compliment when a neighbor slows down to yell to me that I'm so lucky to be "good with wood" as she drives by. This is just how I've chosen to spend a part of my life. I don't think luck has much to do with it.

Hey, have you ever seen the movie "Empire of the Sun"? The British father says that quote "The harder I work the luckier we get".
ReplyDeleteToo funny, although I feel the same way! I have everyone telling me how lucky I am to have our home on the Register, and after spending over six months researching to get the "distinction", all I got was a lousy piece of paper!
